Signs of a bad sprinkler valve

Every zone in your system is opened and closed by one valve, and every valve is fired by one solenoid: a small electromagnet that lives underground in Texas heat and does its job thousands of times a season. When a single zone stops while the rest run fine, the odds overwhelmingly point here, not at the controller and not at the heads. It’s also one of the fastest sprinkler repairs on the whole system, when it’s diagnosed right the first time. We test the coil and the diaphragm before replacing anything, so you only pay for the part that failed.

Zone won't turn on

Failed solenoid coil or broken wire. We test resistance at the controller and at the valve before replacing anything.

Zone won't shut off

Debris under the diaphragm or a torn diaphragm. Rebuilt or replaced: same visit, upfront price.

Valve box is a mystery

Buried, flooded, or unlabeled boxes located electronically, with no exploratory digging in the flower beds.

Zone won't turn on or won't shut off

A zone that won’t turn on usually means a failed solenoid coil or a broken wire. A zone that won’t shut off usually means debris under the diaphragm or a torn diaphragm, which we rebuild or replace on the same visit with an upfront price. Wet ground and a high water bill with every zone working point to a leak instead: see sprinkler leak detection.

Questions

Sprinkler valve repair questions

How do I know if a sprinkler valve is bad?

A zone that won’t turn on, won’t shut off, or runs weak while others are fine usually points to the valve or its solenoid. We test the coil and diaphragm before replacing anything.

Almost always debris holding the valve diaphragm open or a failed solenoid. Shut the system off at the controller; if it keeps running, use the shut-off valve and call.

We locate buried valves electronically with a wire tracer, with no digging up the flower beds hunting for them.
